SBIG STF-8300M Self Guiding Package w/ mono ST-i, using an AstroDon 5nm Ha and Baader RGB filters.

8/17/2014 to 9/30/2014 Chino Valley, AZ... with CCD Commander & CCDSoft.

 Ha 360 min. (24 x 15 min. bin 1x1)

Red

168 min. (24 x 7 min. each bin 1x1)

Green

154 min. (22 x 7 min. each bin 1x1)

Blue

252 min. (36 x 7 min. each bin 1x1)

RGB ratios are 1.00, 1.21 & 1.41

Software & Processing Notes

  • CCDSoft, CCDStack, PixInsight and Photoshop CS6.

  • A standard image-train calibration was used, as determined by eXcalibrator v4.30, and then adjusted for altitude extinction.

  • CCDStack to calibrate, register, normalize, data reject and mean combine the RGB sub exposures and creating the RGB image.

  • PixInsight processing includes gradient repair, non-linear stretching with HistogramTransformation and HDRMultiscaleTransform. .

  • PhotoShop for adding the Ha data to the red channel & final touch-up.

  • Noiseware 5, a PhotoShop plug-in.

North is to the top.

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is an elongated dark globule within the emission nebula IC 1396 in the constellation of Cepheus. Located at a distance of 2,450 light-years, the globule is a condensation of dense gas that is barely surviving the strong ionizing radiation from a nearby massive star. The globule is being compressed by the surrounding ionized gas.
